Preserving a Landmark: Relocating the Historic Storm Tower in Bude

StudioARC is proud to have played a central role in one of Cornwall’s most ambitious heritage preservation projects—the relocation of the Grade II listed Storm Tower in Bude.

In collaboration with Bude-Stratton Town Council, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Cornwall Archaeology Unit, and SSH Conservation Ltd, our team was tasked with a unique and complex challenge: moving the iconic 19th-century structure 127 metres inland to protect it from coastal erosion and the imminent threat of collapse into the sea.

Perched on the edge of the cliff for nearly two centuries, the Storm Tower—also known locally as “The Pepperpot”—is a beloved piece of Bude’s maritime history. Our approach balanced meticulous conservation with innovative engineering to ensure the tower’s future for generations to come.

This project exemplifies our commitment to safeguarding heritage through sensitive, forward-thinking design. We’re honoured to have helped preserve such a significant landmark in Cornwall’s cultural landscape.
