The Leach pottery is over 100 years old with the original buildings designed and built by Bernarnd Leach. The site has been adapted several times throughout its history and, due to its own success, the operations are outgrowing the current facilities, the visitor experience needs improvement.
Working closely with the client and staff, we carried out a feasibility study to understand the existing issues presented by the current buildings and site layout. This led to an options study to consider designs for change and improvement.
There is an incredibly legacy of creativity within the site and it was important to harness this as part of the study and connect the proposals with the processes and materials that are used on site.
The preferred option was a mixture of adapting updating and existing buildings and installing new ones. The use of local, natural and sustainable materials featured heavily within the proposals.
The scheme was submitted for the St Ives Town Deal and the pottery were successful in securing over £3m of funding.
